I see this ALL THE TIME. There are tons of lady bosses out there who are making and doing amazing things, yet they have a few hundred followers on Instagram and an email list that's barely limping along. It hurts my heart, it really does.
Especially because there's a really easy fix.
What if I told you there was ONE thing you could do to ramp up your engagement with your potential clients and customers? And that you already have that ONE thing at your disposal? Would you jump all over it?
Good. Because guess what? That thing is YOU.
Here's why: when you insert yourself into your brand, you make it so much easier for your clients to like and trust you. When people can see the face behind a brand, it lets them connect with you. And when they connect with you, that means they're so much closer to becoming someone who buys your artwork or hires you to take their photos.
As a photographer, I've seen a lot of my peers doing amazing work but not getting that far in their business...and then I see photographers like Jenna Kutcher who are kicking ass and building up their brands to dizzying heights.
She's a great case study. Look at how she brands herself: first of all, her intro tells you what she does, but it also tells you what she likes. Maybe it sounds silly to mention your love of yoga pants and puppies, but I find that so easy to relate to!
And then look at the content itself. It's almost an even split between her wedding photography and pictures of her and her lifestyle. When I first stumbled across her IG, I really liked it because I felt like I got to know her. I know what she looks like, I know what her home looks like (also, #goals), and that made me want to follow her work.
Hilary Rushford, the super-bubbly stylist and entrepreneur, is another amazing example. I love following her because her voice is so unique and authentic—it really comes through in her captions. Here's an example from one of her recent posts: "When do you feel most beautiful? 💋 For me it's when I'm comfortable. In a skirt that isn’t too tight. With friends around whom I can be myself. Knowing my gent thinks I’m lovely sans makeup. Wearing my go-to red lipstick. When the house is freshly cleaned + there’s flowers on the coffee table...For me beautiful isn’t in a certain style, size, season. It’s a choice I can make in my life daily. What makes you feel beautiful?"
She got 250 comments on that post. That's pro-level engagement. That's the kind of engagement that drives, no, rockets potential clients to your website and gets them to sign up for your email list.
It's something I've even noticed myself. When I post pictures of myself or write a soulful caption, I get LITERALLY TWICE the engagement than I do when I show off my branding photography, and my website traffic spikes. If there's one thing you take away: THE PEOPLE WANT TO SEE YOU.
So what can you do today, NOW, to start putting yourself into your brand?
It's easy. Tell people what you like in your IG bio, because chances are, it's going to open up a conversation with your followers (aka potential clients). For your next post, give 'em a picture of you working, or hanging out with your dog, or sitting down for lunch. And make sure you put some effort into your caption. Tell a story. Say what's on your mind. Whatever you do, use it to start engaging with your followers.
I hope you guys found this helpful! Let me know what you think in the comments!
